Your easy guide to hanging wallpaper like a pro
Wallpapering has a bit of a reputation for being tricky - but the truth is, with the right prep and a few smart tips, it's much easier than you think. Once you get into the rhythm, it's even fun! At Eurowalls, we've helped thousands of customers transform their homes with everything from timeless textures to bold murals, and we know the secret: a little preparation goes a long way.
Whether you're working with a classic roll, a textured design, or one of our made-to-measure murals, this guide will walk you through the basics so you can feel confident from the first strip to the final seam.
Work out how much you need
First things first: how many rolls? Don't stress - you don't need to pull out a calculator. Our Roll Calculator does the maths for you.
Still not sure? Email us your wall measurements at orders@eurowalls.com.au and we'll happily help you out.

Prep your walls
Great wallpaper starts with a great surface. For the best results, your wall should be:
- Clean
- Smooth and dry
- Light or neutral in colour
- Slightly absorbent (not glossy or damp)
You might need to sand down bumps, fill small holes with putty, and shine a bright light across the wall to spot imperfections. As one of our favourite installers put it so eloquently in terms of wall preparation 'if you wouldn't paint it, you can't wallpaper it'. Bumps and imperfections will still show through.
For new plaster or freshly built walls, we recommend a white-pigmented wallpaper primer. It helps your adhesive grip and prevents the wall from sucking up paste too quickly. This step might feel small, but it's the difference between wallpaper that looks good on day one and wallpaper that looks good for years to come.

Pick the right paste
Not all wallpapers use the same adhesive, so always check the label. Most of our Eurowalls designs are non-woven, which means they use the easy "paste-the-wall" method (no messy soaking).
You can purchase adhesive from us or head to your local Bunnings and ask for a non-woven wallpaper paste. If you're mixing powder, use cold water, sprinkle it in slowly, and stir until smooth. (Tip: let it sit for a few minutes so it thickens properly).
Cut your strips
Once your paste is ready and your wall is prepped, it's time to cut your wallpaper strips.
Lay the wallpaper face-down on a wallpapering table (or any clean, flat surface). Cut each strip with a bit of extra length at the top and bottom so you can trim neatly once it's up on the wall.
If your wallpaper has a pattern, check the repeat and offset on the label:
- Repeat is how often the design repeats itself (usually around 53cm or 64cm)
- Offset is how much you'll need to shift each strip to match the pattern
If you're using a plain or textured wallpaper with no visible pattern, you can skip this step and cut straight to size.

Hang it up
Here's where the magic happens:
- Roll or brush paste directly onto the wall (slightly wider than the strip you're about to hang).
- Place the wallpaper strip top to bottom with a small overhang.
- Smooth it gently with your hands, then use a spatula or brush to press it into place, working from the centre outwards.
- Trim the excess at the top and bottom with a sharp blade, using your spatula as a guide.
- Wipe away any extra paste with a damp sponge as you go.
Repeat strip by strip, carefully lining up each edge. Non-woven paste gives you a bit of wiggle room with drying time, so don't panic if you need to shift it slightly.
Working with Murals
Working with a mural? Even easier.
Our Eurowalls murals arrive pre-cut into numbered strips designed for your exact wall. No guesswork, no pattern matching. Just prep the wall, paste, and hang the panels in order from left to right. Watching a mural come together is one of the most satisfying parts of wallpapering.

Final checks & Finishing touches
Step back and admire your work. Check the seams are neat, the pattern lines up, and smooth out any air bubbles. (Most small bubbles disappear as the wallpaper dries.)
Then: pack away your tools, roll up the drop cloth, and enjoy your newly transformed space.
